Better public building provides the arguments and the evidence that good design
makes places work better. It offers practical advice for creating new public
building that is value for money, sustainable and a source of civic pride.
And it sets out the steps that public bodies need to follow if they are to
ensure that all those who use public services benefit from good design.

The value handbook is a practical guide, showing how public sector organisations
can get the most from the buildings and spaces in their area. It brings together
essential evidence about the benefits of good design, and demonstrates how
understanding the different types of value created by the built environment
is the key to realising its full potential.

This guide to the principles of inclusive design marks the extension of CABE’s
role in this important area. As we take responsibility for support of the government’s
advisory body on the built environment needs of disabled people, we are determined
to champion design that creates places that everyone can use. As the demographic
shift towards an ageing population intensifies, we’ll continue to argue
that inclusive design is not a choice but a basic essential. The way buildings
and spaces are designed should reflect the principles outlined in this guide.
They’ll also help users to get from A to B more easily.
