Jubilee Primary School forms part of a London Borough of Lambeth initiative aiming to re-examine and re-define the conventional usage and perceptions of schools and their facilities.
The design of the school, one of four primary school developments in the initiative, reflects the rapid changes currently taking place in teaching practice.
The scheme involved the amalgamation of three existing schools into the new school to provide enhanced facilities for the changing needs of the pupils and the local community.
The school accommodates around 470 young children, including a number of profoundly deaf children. The closure of the existing schools was a sensitive issue for the local community and extensive consultation between the many and varied stakeholder groups continued throughout the project, including a website to track the progress of the project and regular site tours for the schoolchildren and the local community.
The judges said:
"A refreshing approach to school design that celebrates life and learning."
