Kingston upon Hull City Council had long held a dream to create a landmark sporting venue, a 'beacon of civic pride' that would sustain professional sport in the city and encourage all sectors of the community to take part in sport generally.
Designed as an asymmetrical bowl, the stadium contains facilities for a range of sports including football, rugby league, badminton, basketball, 5-a-side football and indoor cricket, as well as providing hospitality, conference and banqueting facilities, executive boxes, education and fitness suites and offices for the football and rugby club, with space left for future expansion and development.
The City Council aimed to provide opportunities to local companies and, wherever possible, to use labour from the local pool - a third of the contract sum was spent with local sub-contractors, suppliers and labour.
Key to the success of the project was the emphasis placed upon planning all aspects thoroughly and perhaps the biggest engineering challenge of all was the on-site fabrication and installation of six fully welded super frames that formed the roof structure of the main stand.
The judges said:
"A fine example of the integration of client, users and professionals."
