Newburn Riverside is a major new development for the North East and one of the largest brownfield reclamation projects in the UK, reclaiming the land to a standard suitable for industry park development and devoting an area to public open space.
The park has the capacity to generate 10,000 jobs, and its riverside and wetland trail has been embraced by the community.
A highly sustainable solution was achieved through the use of innovative techniques, sound environmental management and a philosophy of re-use and recycling.
A range of materials encountered on the site was recycled or re-used including: 400 tonnes of graphite for steel production; 800 tonnes of baked carbon and smaller quantities of ash and coal for power station fuel; 2,500 tonnes of steel reinforcement for scrap recycling; 250,000 m3 of concrete crushed and re-used and smaller quantities of graphite waste used in the production of concrete blocks.
