The A6116, an important feeder road for Corby, had reached a 'life-expired' condition. A replacement structural pavement was built beneath an asphalt surface course.

Over 4000 tonnes of materials were removed from the existing road and reprocessed in a mobile plant adjacent to the works, before being reinstalled to form a 100% recycled structural course.

The design of the hot-mix surface course materials for the new road was also novel in that it required inclusion of a 20% component of recycled material which had been recovered as milled material from elsewhere on the local highway network.

The road was closed in phases for the work to be undertaken and finished at the same level as before, thus not requiring any adjustment of kerbs and drainage.

Overall, though, the sustainability of this project was its watchword, with 83% of components from the existing highway reused in the re-engineered road.

The Judges said:

"This road replacement project took an enlightened view of both sustainability and highway life cycle management with significant re-use and recycling of materials and components."
