The Wolfson Medical School is a project developed through close consultation between the designers and the users. The light, open, curvilinear block which has resulted features a three-storey, open study 'landscape', lecture theatres, and a triangular atrium court which sits beneath a stunning glass roof.
This contemporary building seeks to address the historic city centre campus and the future of medical education, incorporating innovative, cutting edge glass design, engineering and construction to translate a clear, conceptual architectural logic.
The sheer glass roof which covers the inner courtyard and social 'heart' of the school is supported by 15.5m long structural glass beams - thought to be a record - while the 'learning landscape' is a reinterpretation of a traditional library, encouraging open group study tutorials with problem-based learning.
The Judges said:
"The Wolfson demonstrates superbly how design for the education sector can be beautiful as well as functional. It has been created to allow for new methods of medical teaching, but also to provide a fitting landmark for Glasgow 's West End in the University's 550th anniversary year."
