This second phase of Cleveleys coastal protection has transformed a dilapidated 1920s seafront into a stunning 21st century seaside environment - with huge benefits for the town of Cleveleys.
Although the principal aim is to protect the town from coastal flooding, the scheme has provided an exciting promenade and seafront, creating a unique sense of place and a source of pleasure and pride among residents. It aims to encourage tourist and retail industries and attract inward investment.
Tide and waves inspire the concept of scheme, reflecting the natural forces of the sea and wind, combined with the engineering technology of sea defences. Attracting visitors was a priority and the visitor is enticed along the redeveloped promenade by points of interest, information and views. The scheme is safe by design and robust enough to withstand the harsh climate - and has a low-carbon footprint.
Phased construction allowed large sections of the promenade to be remain open, minimising disruption to residents and visitors, and the scheme was completed 72 weeks ahead of schedule, with savings of over £1 million.
The judges said: 'A striking response to an increasingly common problem'.
